How to hit your 2020 health goals

Happy New Year beauties! I love this time of year, it’s the perfect excuse to really get stuck into all of the things you said you’d do and haven’t gotten around to! It’s also a great time to undertake a complete body and health detox and set yourself up for the year ahead with a positive start. Here at C&A, we’re all about a helping hand, so below is our top to toe guide for overhauling your body ready to take on 2020!

With an endless supply of summer sun and Christmas indulgences (sugary treats galore), your skin is probably after a little extra love. If you’re not already using these products, now’s the perfect time to start. Think salt body scrubs for an intense clean of your pores, as well as nourishing face masks to get your skin looking fresh and glowing, have you tried our Deep Dive Detox Mask yet?

Hands and feet

I like to give myself a manicure and pedicure every few weeks, as Im so time-poor, an "at-home DIY" - our body scrubs are just the ticket. I just love having well-groomed hands and feet – it makes me feel totally put together!

Inner health

How you feel on the inside is absolutely reflected in how you look on the outside, which is why it’s super important to make sure you’re getting all the vitamins and nutrients your body needs. Busy work schedules and a hectic social life can often mean it’s hard to stay on top of nutrition (and let’s face it, sometimes it’s easier to skip breakfast at work and we’re not going to say no to a glass of vino when we’re out with friends). From daily supplements to monthly detoxes, there are plenty of options to stay on top of your inner health.

Does the mere thought of trying to boost your energy levels make you yawn?

Welcome to the club. As a working girl who always finds herself back at the office a little too soon for her liking post-weekend, I’m struggle to muster the motivation to tie my shoelaces, let alone get on with the job (especially on monday mornings!).

Thankfully, there are a few things we can do to put a spring back in our step. The best part? They’re all ridiculously easy. Promise.

1. Let the light in

It may sound obvious, but there’s a reason why we sleep better in total darkness – because light wakes us up. So, instead of stumbling around in the dark, open up your blinds as soon as you rise from your slumber. The light will stimulate your body to stop the release of the sleep hormone melatonin and make waking up easier. A lovely segue into smart devices, put. them. down…. The blue light that’s emitted from these screens can delay the release of sleep-inducing melatonin, increase alertness, and reset the body’s internal clock (or circadian rhythm) to a later schedule. Also, avoid using energy-efficient (blue) bulbs in nightlights in bedrooms and bathrooms; opt for dim red lights instead because red light has a higher wavelength and does not suppress the release of melatonin.

2. Play a game or watch a funny movie.

A good laugh isn’t just enjoyable – it’s invigorating. Why? Well, it helps increase blood flow, which in turn boosts energy levels. It also helps your brain release endorphins, which can make you feel more awake. So, whether you get the giggles from watching Amy Schumer doing stand-up or a silly game of charades, it’s well worth making time for a laugh.

3. Chew gum

According to a study from Cardiff University in Wales, chewing gum can help you stay alert and concentrate for longer on tasks that require continuous focus. Which means that if you chew gum while watching the aforementioned movie, you’ll probably have enough of a buzz to write an entire novel afterwards (ok, maybe not a whole novel, but still).

4. Embrace scent

… But not just any scent. Opt for rosemary oil (which enhances alertness, according to a study from Northumbria University in Newcastle upon Tyne, England) so try anything from our PROTECT range.

5. Coffee and a power nap, in that order

You may think you’re not supposed to drink coffee before going to bed, but it turns out having one before a short siesta may actually be a good idea. Speaking to, Orfeu Buxton of Pennsylvania State University says caffeine’s energising effect kicks in roughly 20 minutes after you drink it – which allows just enough time for a power nap. "By the time you wake up, you’ll feel alert without grogginess," he says. Dont forget our most divine coffee & clementine coffee scrub - RESTORE, perfect for an early morning pick me up!  #Winning!

So how can you ensure that your determination to get healthier in 2020 sticks around past Valentine's Day? By creating new habits. Creating new habits takes time and energy. A new behavior won't become automatic overnight, but you may enjoy some of its benefits fairly quickly. Also, as you start to take walks regularly or engage in stress-soothing practices frequently, you'll find you won't feel quite right if you stop. That's a great incentive to continue. So, keep nudging yourself in the direction you'd like to go.

Repeat after me "forget perfection" its all about putting some effort in and any activity is always better than none. If your goal for Tuesday is a 30-minute workout at the gym, but you only squeeze in 10 minutes, feel grateful for that.

It's enough. Maybe tomorrow will be better.

Happy 2020 lovelies,

Michelle xoxo
