Taking daily supplements can be a convenient way to give your body some of the nutrients it needs. On the flip side, if you're relying on them for your daily dose of magnesium, you're falling way short of the RDA which in and of itself is too low.
"An astounding number of biochemical reactions in the body cannot do without magnesium," says Carolyn Dean, a nutritionist and the author of The Magnesium Miracle. "It helps you to digest food, eases migraines, and promotes a healthy heart. And there is evidence that shows that up to 80 percent of the population is deficient in magnesium." Dean links the common deficiency to a shortage of minerals in our soil. "Magnesium has been farmed out of the soil, so it's not in vegetables, and animals don't get it from the plants that they eat."

Slathering magnesium onto your skin - be it a spray, scrub, bath or cream with magnesium can help," says Dean. They can be an effective way to help get the recommended amount of magnesium—about 310 to 320 milligrams per day, according to the Office of Dietary Supplements at the National Institutes of Health.
Additionally, magnesium's benefits for your skin are as extensive as the benefits for your health. "Magnesium helps improve your skin's overall appearance, reducing acne and other skin disorders by lowering cortisol levels, stabilizing hormonal imbalances, and improving cellular processes," says Dendy Engelman, a dermatologist in New York City. So if a clear, even skin tone is what you're after, transdermal magnesium may be for you.
